Ann Fuhring
Ann Fuhring built a replica cassetta frame for her most recent painting (“Plumskull” 11” x 14” oil on linen panel) using scrap wood, specifically two oak stair treads and a discarded kitchen cabinet door.
Cassetta frames - ubiquitous in Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries - are defined by a flat, inner section called a frieze which is bordered by raised mouldings on the inner and outer edges and hand-painted painted pastiglia details in the corners of the frieze.
Frame and moulding dimensions were computed using an online picture frame calculator. The inner moulding, which was cut on the shaper with a ½ inch double bullnose router bit, acts as the frame’s rabbet. The oak corner frame has 56 miter cuts. After the assembled frame left Woodchips, it was painted and distressed to create an aged appearance.
Ann wishes to thank Dave, Gary, Scott and Teo for their invaluable assistance with this project.
